Doing a great lunch bar…

Here’s some pictures from last weeks mission in Bournemouth with some tips on running a great lunch bar. There are several practical aspects that all combine to determine how the event will go.

1. Find a good venue. This lounge is right in the centre of campus and just off a main thoroughfare where people would pass to buy lunch. There are bigger venues available but a small room that is packed is better than a big room that is nearly empty.

2. Set up the room well. Make sure everyone can sit facing the front. Tables set up with gospels, mission week flyers, follow up courses flyers, feed back forms and pens (vital if you want to get people to actually fill out the feedback form). Have a box at the door clearly marked for people to put them in and have some one stand by it.

3. Get great food. Works well if you get local churches to provide it. The old ladies will love the competition of trying to out do the others in the food they produce! Make sure you have plates, cups and serviettes (often forgotten!).

4. Flyer well. have people handing out flyers at every approach to the venue. Make sure they draw attention to the food AND the talk. Then also have someone on the door. When it gets busy the person on the door can shout at the title of the lunch bar and announce the free lunch. This helps people feel that something significant is going on.

5. Big high impact publicity that gets peoples attention.

6. Once the room is getting full make a start – don’t leave it too long or else people may leave. Have someone host the event – to explain what will happen. Then 15-20 minutes of talk followed by up to 20 minutes of questions. Don’t overrun – people may have lectures to get to.
